How To Lose When Trying To Make Money On EBay

There are hundreds of thousands of registered sellers on eBay. Take a look at them all and you’re likely to discover that a few are making millions, a few more are making thousands, and a slew of them are making little or nothing with the majority ending up in debt, their dreams crushed.

Look with an analytical mind and you’ll quickly discover several patterns: one common set for those who have failed and another set for those who are succeeding. If you’re working on a doctoral thesis in psychology, you could probably get a book published on it. But for our purposes, we’ll just keep it simple.

John Paul Dejoria, cofounder of John Paul Systems, is fond of saying, “Successful people do the things that unsuccessful people won’t.” And, well, that pretty much sums it up, doesn’t it?

Take a look at any MLM (multi-level marketing) program and you’re sure to find a bevy of veteran MLM’ers who have tried virtually every program on the books, but never succeeded at a one of them. Many of them bounce from one company to the next because they are somehow convinced that if they can just “find the right opportunity,” their business will take off. But it has little to do with the opportunity and more to do with doing — or in this case, a lack of doing.

I was helping out a new eBay seller many years ago. He was working with an eBay drop shipper as his product source, but told me he couldn’t find any products worth selling. I accessed his drop shipper’s inventory and did some research, finding several products that were doing quite well on eBay.

After giving him an example, he promptly replied, “I can’t sell that!” Actually, he could. He just wouldn’t. No wonder he wasn’t experiencing success.

I’ve worked closely with one of Utah’s top entrepreneurs. He’s passionate about his business, but more important, he’s one of the hardest working entrepreneurs I’ve ever met. As a result, his business thrives while his competitors wallow. Looking for easy? Then you’re looking for failure.

Is it possible to be successful on eBay? Of course it is! But whether or not you make it is going to have a direct correlation to how much effort you are willing to put into it.
